Wednesday, December 20, 1995 Winter is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the outdoors. When the air is brisk, the sky as blue as a robin's egg, and sparkling white snow crunches underfoot, there are few greater pleasures than to get outside.

Well, OK Ñ not all winter days are like that. But even when weather or circumstances don't cošperate, outdoor enthusiasts stuck inside can enjoy winter sports "virtually" on the Internet.

Anyone planning a visit to Whistler or Blackcomb can visit the resorts' terrific home page . Many ski resorts have created such "home pages", or World Wide Web sites. The Consummate Skiing List offers a super index to downhill skiing, cross country skiing and snowboarding Web pages. Another omnibus Web site is Snoweb , with links to resorts all over the world, commercial listings, ski associations, event calendars, and classified ads. GORP Ñ the Great Outdoors Recreation Pages Ñ has a nice Snowsports page at . A stop of interest for all those who love Nordic skiing is Cross Country Ski World .

With snowboarding fast becoming as popular as skiing, there are dozens of Web sites dedicated to the sport. Snowboarders surfing the Net should check out Jason Dow's Snowboarding Home Page . The Snowboard Directory offers a thorough guide to snowboarding products.

An excellent virtual destination for those who love skating is the Canadian Figure Skating Fan Page , with links to biographies of famous skaters, schedules of competitions, and loads of graphics. Sports fishers will find a FAQ ("frequently asked questions") about ice fishing at the Outdoors Online Fishing Centre . There is a web page dedicated to ski jumping at Jump . Wilcox & Williams sponsor a Web site about snowshoeing at The Snowshoe Pages .

Information about still other winter sports can be tracked down using an Internet "search engine" like Yahoo . Search engines allow one to look for information either by keyword, or by subject categories.

Anyone interested in using the Internet may call 231-6405 to book time on one of Richmond Public Library's three free Internet terminals. Ideas and suggestions for the "New on the Net" column can be e-mailed to suzanc@yourlibrary.ca.
