Richmondites protest jailing of Chinese dissident
By Jennifer Chow
Staff Reporter
About 20 Richmond residents were among a group of 60 Asian-Canadians who protested China's jailing of prominent dissident Jingsheng Wei Sunday in front of the Chinese Consulate in the Shaughnessy area of Vancouver.
Protesters burned the communist flag in a show of anger against China during the rally sponsored by the Vancouver Society in Support of Democratic Movement.
On Dec. 13, Wei was sentenced to 14 years in jail for sedition for selling articles to the foreign media, attacking the Chinese government and demanding Tibet's independence.
Wei, 46, had just finished serving a lengthy jail term for similar crimes and had celebrated only six months of freedom when arrested. He has spent most of his adult life in jail fighting for democracy and basic human rights in China. He was nominated for the Nobel peace prize this year.
The protesters wanted to send a clear message to China Sunday that their actions had not gone unnoticed.
