Going in search of love.com

Using the Internet to make a love (or friendship) connection is becoming as popular as Saturday night at the movies.

Once considered the domain of the geeky, there are plenty of positive testimonials to consider online dating as a legitimate way to find a significant other.

According to PC Magazine, single friends are one of the best sources for finding reputable dating sites.

One avid on-line dater and friend recommends Two for the Show (http://www.twofortheshow.com) for meeting people who enjoy local cultural events.

She also recommends Rotate-a-date (http://www.rotateadate.com) with its connection for eight-minute speed date parties. Registration is free, but party members pay for the $45 meal and 90-minutes of speed dates.

The possibilities are seemingly endless. Imagine the perfect-for-you mate and there is bound to be a web site service with a potential match. Save time in searching for the options by using a dating directory such as Singles on the Go (http://www.singlesonthego.com) or Singles Online Dating (http://www.singles-online-dating.com). They include tips for on-line dating safety, snagging online attention and other valuable dating information.

Many sites allow visitors to search and browse at no charge. While looking ask the following questions: Does the site offer help in writing a profile or introductionor any other services? How well is privacy protected? What is the cost?

Yahoo! Personals (http://www.personals.yahoo.com), Canada Singles (http://www.canada.single.com) and MatchSquare.com are among the myriad of basic, free on-line services. The matching is based on gender, age, locations, education, and hobbies.

However, the term "free" in on-line lingo can mean "no charge until you want to make a connection." Free can also include a bombardment of spam and promotions for pornographic web sites. Users beware.

More advanced matching techniques can be found with the likes of Match.com (http://www.match.com). Their matchings are based on detailed profiles created free of charge, but membership is required to make an e-mail connection.

Anonymity is well protected and reasonable rates are set for up to four months.

Most importantly, prior to plunging into the on-line dating pool, it is well worth having a clear and attractive photo to send. The number of dark and unappealing mug shots hoping to attract a love match is staggering! A healthy dose of humour is also helpful.
