Be cat-friendly to our seniors
Editor:
To live with a cat is to share a lifetime of love in a look, a pat, a purr. Youve spent years building a bond, knowing each other, feeling comfortably companionable with this special gift and the special years.
Although cats do need care, they are low maintenance if kept inside and make a wonderful loving companion to an aging person who is often alone, perhaps sick. Cats have been known to heal physically and psychologically in reducing blood pressure, heart problems, anxiety and loneliness, and can bring much joy and comfort to the senior with something to love and be loved in return.
Then why are there so few cat-friendly facilities in Richmond? I mean apartments for the over 55 where committees decide they shall be cat-less!
I am one of those faced with losing my beloved cat (indoor) and am already grieving her loss trying to find a loving home for her. Come on whoever makes these cruel decisions, lets be cat-friendly to our seniors!

Another phone book
Editor:
On Saturday, June 3 I received a yellow pages phone book from Telus for Richmond and South Delta 2006/07. I already had a SuperPages (yellow pages) phone book from Telus for Richmond and South Delta.
Im up to my rear end in phone books, it seems a terrible waste of paper although the new book is thinner, I wonder if the books are made of recycled paper?

For a few dollars more
Editor:
I have a few words to say about the 27 per cent raise the councillors voted themselves at Mondays council meeting.
Firstly, a councillor gets about a $8,000 a year raise (Actually, its $8,800Ed.). Sounds like a lot till you break it down$8,000 divided by 30 months that is what is left in their term is about $266.66 a month or $8.66 a day or about 36¢ per hour. (Shouldnt that be $21,269.08 divided by 29 months? The raise is $8,800 a yearEd.)
For this they attend meetings daily, nightly and on weekends there is no cap on the number of hours worked a week and at times the whole weekend is spent at meetings and openings of various venues.
If you feel the councillors and mayor do not do a worthwhile job for the City of Richmond and you would like to jump onto the gravy train, then I sincerely urge you to vote them out next term and do this job yourself. Then you can have no life on the weekends and evenings just like they do.

Out of whack
Editor:
Yes, Richmond is out of whack with the way councillors are all spending our money on the oval, trips and now large increase in salaries.
Poor councillors. They claim to be so hard done by. If you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
We are the ones that are left to pay for all this heavy spending.
We just got a nice increase in our taxes. What next?

Scrap thieves
Editor:
There were some two legged mice at the airport two years ago. I put sandwiches in my bag going to Edmonton. On arrival they disappeared.
Last year I went to the United Kingdom. My brass name plate disappeared off my navy uniform. It cost approximately $15.
The junkies collect scrap. A navy veteran friend of mine had his house burglarized. They stole his war medals which cost $50 to replace. So I am happy that the city council is going to shut down these junkies with shopping carts full of scrap metal. These carts cost the grocery store about $100 each. The grocery stores lose thousands of dollars worth of carts. The cost is passed on to the customer.
