Two very different, but equally interesting exhibits are currently sharing space at the Richmond Art Gallery.

In the main gallery, Identity '97, a juried exhibition organized by the Community Art Councils of Richmond, Delta, Surrey and White Rock is one of the many juried regional art shows which form the preliminary exhibitions to artWORK, the visual component of the B.C. Festival of the Arts.

Forty-two varied creations from emerging and professional artists run the gamut from an incredibly beautiful Jade Dragon, (in copper) by Phillip Chappell, the whimsical Hey, What Happened to Fred, acrylic/canvas by Mary Frances Batut, the cuddly Standing Room Only, a clay and mixed media sculpture by Nicki Prinsen, the comical Wired Wade, a metal piece by Wade Scheer, to the smooth sensuousness of Veronica Wai Lui's pottery Water Drops; there's an incredible range of talent.

It's impossible not to find something you'd just love to take home with you. And you can! Most of the pieces are for sale, there's a price list at the Gallery, and the gift shop assistants at Present in the Park (shop hours 10 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 to 4 p.m. Saturday) will be happy to help.

In the combined second and third galleries The 3rd Annual Exhibition and Silent Art Auction Sale: Chinese Canadian Artists' Expressions of a New Homeland pretty much says it all. Invited and selected artists from the Chinese Canadian Artists Federation in Vancouver have created paintings, calligraphy and sculptures that reflect their new place in British Columbia's landscape.

Thirty artists display a collection of works that combine the aesthetics of their art traditions with an appreciation for new techniques, new attitudes and a contemporary take on the assimilation and acculturation process.

All the art is available for bids (instructions are provided at the Gallery) with the money raised helping to fund activities of the Richmond Art Gallery and the Chinese Canadian Artists Federation, both of whom are in the business of cultural enrichment of the community.

The closing reception will be today (Saturday) March 1st from 1 to 4 p.m., with bids closing at 2:30 p.m. and winners announced at 3:30 p.m.
