Getting married thanks to technology

I walked into my first marriage preparation class in the basement of an old church last week with a bit of a chip on my shoulder.

After all, why do I need take these required classes when I have this relationship thing down pat.

This summer, just after the seventh anniversary since my fiancee and I started dating, we will be taking our wedding vows.

And all the credit goes to a bit of perseverance and dedication and a whole lot of television technology.

All you sports lovers and sports widows out there have probably feuded at one time or another over who controls the television remote (known in some homes as the clicker or channel changer). The two of us are no different.

But things will change this summer thanks to a new bit of hardware that will help defuse those tense moments when I WILL DIE UNLESS I watch the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals or Stanley Cup Championships, and she MUST SEE the latest episode of The Nanny, Hercules or Xena: Warrior Princess.

The secret to our wedded bliss will be picture-in-picture television.

According to a TV salesman, Sony manufactures a television set that will keep the two of us happy. It'll allow both of us to watch our shows on the same screen - which will be split in half - with one of us having to wear a cordless set of headphones for sound.

If there's one thing I've learned since I began dating, compromise is the secret to any successful relationship. But I simply can't change my need-to-know-the-latest-sports-scores attitude. And although she's tried her best, my fiancee can't consume more than a few seconds of 'boring' television sports.

And that's where state-of-the-art electronics steps in.

Fifty years from now when my grandchildren ask me what the secret is to our successful marriage, I'll tell them the truth and say compromise is the key...along with a bit of technology.
