Paesano's ("my friend" in English) is a term of endearment in Italian.
It's a fine choice for the name of an 80-seat restaurant serving fine Italian cuisine here in the heart of Richmond.
First off, let's deal with the location. The restaurant, at 133-9800 No. 3 Rd., is not visible from the street. Cross Alderbridge, going north on No. 3, then cross Alexandra. Turn in at the first driveway. You'll see it tucked into the northeast corner.
Paesano's gets full marks for making diners feel at home upon arrival. It begins with the warm yellow lighting and equally as warm greeting at the door and continues through the lovely background music. A harmonious blend of low walls allows for a more intimate dining experience.
The menu is neither too long, nor too short. There are 10 delectable appetizers and salads, hot or cold. I had the baked artichoke hearts while first (and only) husband Gary had a hot and flavorful bowl of tortellini soup. They were $4.95 and $3.95 respectively.
There are 14 pasta dishes offered, and something for every taste, from the ubiquitous lasagna to an exotic seafood feast with a marinara or cream sauce. Pastas range in price from $10.95 to $14.95.
The 13 entrees all have their roots in northern Italy except, as far as I can tell, the prawns alforno - definitely from the southern region. I had my standard touchstone dish of rack of lamb and give the presentation full marks, but alas, getting through the wrap of fat (which keeps the meat moist) presented some problems.
The entree comes with a choice of pasta or veggies. At $15.95 to $18.95, you could always forego the pasta starter and sample some with your main course instead.
Paesano's is also open for lunch. For reservations, call 270-9252.
