Steveston's Eberhardt rightly pointed out that Steveston does have it's own very real newspaper. Eberhardt penned me a letter after reading about the travels of a Review salesperson who stumbled upon the office of the Steveston Gazette. Turns out, it just part of a movie set. The Steveston Phoenix is a real paper that admirably serve the South Richmond community with its quality coverage of area events and people. And it's nice to see Eberhardt remembering my column from way back. In answer to your question, I did stop writing. I took a break to pen my memoirs and travel the world. ***Was I the only one who nearly fell on my keister from my restaurant seat when the thundering roar flew by from up-above Monday night? I had no idea just what that low-flying jet could be. I called my good friend and golfing partner Earle Weichel at the Vancouver International Airport. He says someone there also heard the sound, but there were no records of a plane that could make such a loud squeal landing at the airport. At first I thought we had a real mystery here, or perhaps my ears had gone batty, until I got a call from another sky-watcher. Andy Vasarins, regional director of NAV Canada, said a Canadian Forces F-18 jet did a practice approach at the airport at about the time I was chowing down on the succulent Chicken Terriyaki, prawn tempura and miso soup. Although I've always sympathized with the plight of Bridgeport Road area residents about the increase in plane noise in their area, there's nothing like actually hearing something like that firsthand. I can't imagine what it's like living with that noise day in and day out. ***Got some gossip? Share it with Lulu by leaving a message with The Review at 273-7744 or fax 273-5272. |
