Dave Scott, you deserve it.

Better known to his fish-and-chips fans simply as Dave, as in Dave's At Steveston Landing, he was presented with a plaque by the Steveston Salmon Festival Committee for his help in reducing waste during the last two annual salmon festivals.
It all stems from the Steveston Centre Environment Committee's push to use re-usable plates instead of the more convenient (but environmentally unfriendly) disposable variety for its much-anticipated salmon bake. Scott donated the use of the restaurant dishwasher to get the job done and several of his staff reportedly also helped wash, dry and stack all 1,875 plates.
Since then the committee has raised enough funds to purchase its own dishwasher for the Steveston community centre, so we salmon lovers can look forward to more environmentally friendly barbecues in the future.
Any readers out there who would like to join the Steveston environment committee are welcome to leave their name and phone number at the centre.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, but those Richmondites of Jewish faith are more likely to be celebrating the beginning of the Jewish new year - 5758. During two holy days this week (Thursday and Friday), many Jews pray and concentrate on resolutions, to help set the mood for the new year. Area synagogues will be extra busy a week Friday when Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins at 6:14 p.m. on Oct. 10, and continues with a 25-hour fast to the following evening. For an up-close look at some of the ceremonies involved, all are welcome to attend the High Holy Day services and all their symbolism at the Lubavitch Centre at 5750 Oak St. in Vancouver.

I'm observing another special day this week: World Farm Animals Day on Thursday. EarthSave Canada suggests that "we all should stop and think about the short, painful lives of the approximately 491 million animals that are killed each year in Canada for food (that's 935 animals per second!)" No, EarthSave is not a bunch of wackos, but a society that promotes a more ecologically sound way to use the earth for food production (namely grains and produce over livestock) as well as a healthier, vegetarian diet.
