I love war-bride stories and here's a good one:
Steveston couple John and Eileen Bouchard were married 50 years ago on Sept. 6 (belated congrats to you both!). John, born in Richmond 77 years ago, met Eileen Morrison, a Canadian Army telephone operator while he served in London in the radio communications corps, when he was better known as Sgt. Bouchard. They were reacquainted after the war when Eileen returned to Vancouver.
They married and set up home in Richmond where John operated Top Notch Electric and later devoted much time to preserving local heritage. Eileen worked briefly for BC Tel before moving into full-time parenting of their two children, but she's more likely to be known around town as an active, 30-year member of the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary.
Friends, the whole fam damily and even their best man joined the couple to celebrate their golden anniversary.
While I'm on the subject of longtime relationships, Nadine Fick, formerly of Richmond, and Natalie Logan of Crystal Brook, South Australia, have finally met face-to-face, after being pen pals for 60 years (that's since the two were 13 years old!).
Back in March, Fick, who now lives in Kelowna but plans to move back here, took a trip Down Under, where she reports in a lovely letter to The Review that she enjoyed "A very warm welcome" by Logan.
Fick and her pen pal have "watched" each other's family grow up through years of correspondence. Today, both women, both widowed, have six decades of memories to share and savor and a lot of common ground.
She defied the odds and made it to 100 years of age.
The eldest resident at Rosewood Manor, Henrietta Sourp, died peacefully after a century in this world.
She is survived by daughter-in-law Pat Ghequiere, three grandchildren Carol Steward and Bryan and Steven Ghequiere and great-grandchildren, Tony, Richelle and Lauren.
