Steveston judoka win five medals

The future is bright for a group of young Steveston judoka.

Of the seven athletes who competed at the Spirit International Open Judo Tournament in North Van last Saturday, five returned with medals.

Amanda Miyashita won first in the junior girls’ under-60 kilogram class, Ashley Cameron second in the under-21 kilogram class and Alanna Schroder, also second in the under-43 kilogram division.

Vladimir LaMontaigne earned silver in the junior boys’ under-43 kilogram weight group and Elizabeth Adams earned a third place bronze in the under-57 kilogram class in junior girls.

Kajaks among the elite Sun runners

Richmond Kajaks Norm Tinkham and Colin Dignum are among an elite field of athletes who will vie for the coveted first place in the Canadian Airlines Invitational Elite Division during Sunday’s 10k Sun Run.

James Koskei of Kenya, who placed first in the Dupont Spring Run Off in Toronto last weekend, is also a favourite along with countrymen David Kiptarus and Joseph Ndritu, as are Canadians Bruce Deacon and Jason Warick.

Former Sun Run winners Leah Pells and Nancy Tinari will also face tough competition from Kenya’s Sally Barsosio, the ‘97 Sun Run champion.

Gosse named second team goaltender

Richmond’s Erin Gosse received plenty of accolades for her play at the Canadian Ringette Championships in Prince George last week, as it was her goaltending that was instrumental in B.C. earning a bronze medal at Belle division.

Gosse’s efforts were further recognized with her being named to the Second All-star Team.

Alberta dominated the tournament, winning gold at the Junior, Belle and Intermediate levels.

The national women’s team will have their final selection camp in Winnipeg in May. Teams from Finland and the United States will be competing against Canada’s best.

Renegades impressive

The Richmond Renegades quickly shook off the disappointment of not being able to play in the bantam “C” playoff final by engineering a pair of impressive showings at the recent Richmond non-contact tournament.

After learning that Burnaby Winter Club had defeated Arbutus to take Richmond’s place in the playoff game, the Renegades focused their attention on the Vernon Trashers and went on to post a nail-biting 4-3 victory.

The Thrashers scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead before Richmond rallied in the third on goals by Yong Min Kim and Rensleigh. A.J. McKenzie, Kyle Campbell and Aydin Smith drew assists.

The final seven minutes were a clinic in skating as both teams looked for the winning goal. With 40 seconds remaining, Gaelen Mogan got the puck and went one-on-one with a much smaller Vernon defender and with a quick move was on a breakaway. Vernon goalie Adam Maxnuk made a brilliant stick save on the initial shot but couldn’t corral the puck. Christopher Bergmann picked it up and passed to Jordan Cosulich who found Mogan alone in the slot - giving Richmond a 4-3 victory.

Later, Cosulich almost single-handedly led Richmond to an 8-4 win over the Thunderbirds.

Ryan Reid of Richmond won the gold medal in the senior boys’ division at the 2000 Canadian Tenpin Federation Provincial Finals held at Mayfair Lanes in Victoria April 1 and Evergreen Lanes in Nanaimo on April 2.

Erin Reid won the silver medal in the senior girls’ division bowling 3048 in 16 games. Her average was 190. And Jaime Munch also won silver in the Junior boys’ division. He scored 2918 in 16 games, an average of 182.

Nakano given spirit award

Wendy Nakano of the Steveston Kendo Club was presented with the Individual Fighting Spirit Medal after earning a third place team medal at the 11th World Kendo Championships in Santa Clara, Cal. recently.

Nakano is a member of the Canadian Kendo Team, coached by Steveston Kendo Club instructor Ray Murao. This was the third time Murao led the national team at the worlds, having recently received his 7th Degree Black Belt.
