Jampole, Sargent net hat tricks

Rachael Jampole and Shelby Sargent each scored hat tricks and Candance Jue was a standout in net as the Speedy Dalmations topped the Hoppers 11-6 in Richmond Ringette Bunny Division play Sunday.

Holly Danicek-Rybiki and Holly Lo added two goals apiece and Anelisa Di Pasquale an unassisted tally for the winners. Katharyn Sheng-Taylor, Alexa Fraser and Dakota Doherty-Scott shone defensively.

Mitchell preserves draw for novices

Goalie Ashley Mitchell stood tall as Richmond Executors and Burnaby Rockets played to a 4-4 draw in Novice B ringette Saturday.

Alana Levido, Jessica Jue and Jaime Banno were among the Richmond scorers, but it was the aggressive forechecking and passing skills displayed by the line of Kathleen Cardno, Katie Allesia and Larissa Leong that stood out, particularly early in the first period when the locals dominated.

Grumley comes up big for determined Wildcats

Jane Grumley scored two first-half goals and made a pair of big saves while tending net early in the second Sunday, leading Richmond Wildcats to a 4-1 win over Surdel Eagles in under-11 girls’ soccer.

The victory propels the Wildcats on to the South District Cup consolation final.

Jessica Chiu also scored in the first half, which was dominated by the Wildcats. Rielly Miller added the fourth Richmond goal midway through the second. After the Eagles scored their only goal, Chiu replaced Grumley late in the final frame and made two more huge saves to keep the Eagles at bay.

“It is very much a team effort,” coach Mike Fletcher says of the Wildcats’ success.

Fletcher continues to be particularly impressed by his team’s defensive play, noting they’ve allowed only one goal since Christmas. Heather Tijman, Sandy Poupart, Olivia Kahng and Melanie McPhail have all be solid in the backfield.

Richmond hosts first-place Guildford Grasshoppers Sunday at Blundell. The Wildcats are just a point back of the Grasshoppers in the league standings.

Sonics drop playoff opener in final seconds

The Seafair Sonics proved an old adage on the weekend: When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Trailing 6-2 in the third, the Sonics exploded for four goals in as many minutes to the tie game before losing 7-6 in the final 1.9 seconds to rival Seafair Atom C3s in the opening game of the Gold group hockey playoffs.

The Sonics rebounded for a solid 7-1 win in Burnaby Sunday, with T.K. Hogarth-Davis standing tall in the nets. Cody A’Hearn and Taylor Lorenz, including a shorthanded effort, scored twice for Seafair, and Donald O’Connor, Ross McPhail and Andrew Parker added singles. Cailin Lau, Terrol Cunnliffe, Andrew McMillan and Matthew Smith were solid on defense.

Scott stands tall in Renegades' victory

The final game of the regular season may also have been the most rewarding for the Richmond Renegades.

Having managed only one win in six previous meetings with the first-place Rockets, the Renegades were clearly underdogs heading into last weekend's Midget C hockey showdown. The Renegades had also just completed six games in nine days.

But while the Rockets scored first, it was the Renegades who ultimately prevailed 4-2 thanks largely to the spectacular goaltending of Shawn Scott who continually left the Rockets frustrated.

Chad Oyhenart and Gaelen Mogan combined to set up Jay Howard for the Renegades' first goal. Howard, who led the team in scoring with 37 points, scored his second moments later from Vincent Forsberg and Michael Knowles. The Rockets squared the game at two in the second period, but Tim Lin restored the Renegades' lead set up by Carl Chia and Darcy Pi.

The Rockets had a goal waved off in the third, setting the stage for Lin's insurance tally. The goal was set up Dominic Jugovic and Pi.

The Renegades head into the playoffs with an 8-15-2 mark.
