Nature's wonders' on display

Arts and fish enmesh at cannery
Pacific Salmon exhibit opens today at Gulf of Georgia
The marriage of art and the fishing industry continues as the Gulf of Georgia Cannery opens its doors today for Pacific Salmon-A Fresh Outlook.
The multi-media art show features the work of 15 artists, and explores the resource itself: the Pacific salmon.
The artists attended information sessions earlier this year to learn about the biology, life-cycle and harvesting of Pacific salmon, as well as the economic and cultural significance to British Columbians.
The exhibitors then took this information and through their creative skill produced the works for the show.
Artists in the show are: Barbara Bull, Randolph Celebrini, John Deasey, Doreen Dubreuil, Kathryn Ellis, Shannon Hougham, Jo Ann Kronquist, Fae Logie, Maureen McLean, Lea Price, Marion Rose, Marlene Strain, Bill Thomson, Teresa Takeuchi and Ivo Van Gemerden.
This is the fifth year the national historical site in Steveston has hosted an art show examining an aspect of the fishing industry.
Last year's show, Workforces, focused on the people who worked in fishing, and drew 6,000 visitors.
The Gulf of Georiga Cannery (12138 Fourth Ave.) is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The show runs until July 26.

Consultants hired by task force
The city's Group Home Task Force has hired two consultant groups to take care of research and the media.
When the task force was struck by council in March, the independent group was allocated $50,000 for its use. In addition to the funds, the city is providing meeting space and staff support when necessary.
Last week, the task force hired Don Cameron and Associates to conduct research on their behalf. Also, Chinese Informedia Consulting Group was hired to distribute keep both the English- and Chinese-language media informed about developments at task force meetings, which are held on a weekly basis.
The task force was struck in response to concerns from some residents about the city's process in placing new group homes. The group's mandate will be to recommend a model for community input about the location and operation of the homes. They will also look into the impact that existing homes have on present neighbourhoods.
The 10-member group is made up of three people from the Association of Richmond Homeowners (a neighbourhood group), two from Richmond Community Services Advisory Committee, one from the Vancouver/Richmond Health Board and four people selected at random from
Collision closes No. 3 Road
A 65-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he collided with two cars on No. 3 Road Thursday afternoon.
The chain of events began at 3:30 p.m. in the 8600-block of No. 3 Road, when a 65-year-old man driving a white Audi hit a white 1994 Mercury Sable. The Sable went off the road and struck a power pole before coming to rest in a front yard. The Audi continued northbound and hit a second car before striking a lamp pole.
The street was closed for a short period following the incident.
Richmond RCMP is investigating the cause of the collisions and is not ruling out a medical condition that may have been a contributing factor.
