Ruths late goal gives Canucks tie
With captain Imran Sumar sidelined by a bruised knee, Dustyn Ruth, Jessie Bigras and Evan Gilbert scored two goals apiece as the Richmond Canucks tied the Vancouver C5s 6-6 in Novice Division hockey Sunday.
Ruth and Bigras also combined on the equalizer late in the third period as Richmond fought back from several two-goal deficits.
RuffRyders end season on high
The Richmond RuffRyders ended regular-season play last weekend with back-to-back wins over the Seafair C1s, including a 4-3 decision Sunday in Bantam Division C5 hockey.
Both goalies, Eric Wood of Richmond and Brent Rintoul of Seafair, played well. Wood made several big saves late in the game after Seafairs Kris Lee (who scored a hat trick) pulled his team to within a goal. Slavic Teplitsky scored twice for Richmond.
Curler to join sports hall of fame
Richmonds Greg McAulay is being inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame. McAulay won the provincial, national and world mens curling championships in 2000.

The Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club hosts its annual Icebreaker eight-kilometre race Feb. 3 at the Steveston Community Centre. The event, the first in the Timex-Asics B.C. Road Running Series, welcomes runners of all levels. The race begins at 8:30 a.m.
Quinn mighty scorer for Seafair Novices
Travis Quinn scored four goals and had three assists to lead Seafair Ice Demons to a 10-4 win over Richmond C6s in Novice Division hockey Sunday.
Ryan Cuthbert and Stephen Gordon had a goal and assist each for Seafair.
Locals leading hoop Birds
Richmonds Carrie Rogers scored 16 points as the UBC Thunderbirds topped Trinity Western 76-50 in university womens hoops play Friday.
Kyle Russell scored 31 points Saturday as UBC lost 90-88 in overtime to Trinity Western in mens action.

Seafair sending three to scholarship game
Four players from the Seafair Minor Hockey Associations Juvenile Division A team have been selected to participate in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockeys Juvenile Scholarship Tournament Feb. 3 to 9.
Mike Rae, who is captain of the Seafair team; alternate captain Jayson Eliott, Allen Morris and William Dunn were all nominated from their team based on the qualities of good sportsmanship, leadership, character and playing ability.
Coach John Taylor has also been selected to coach one of the three teams representing their conference grouping.
A bursary award worth $300 is to be awarded to a player on each of the three tournament teams.
Dogwood Invitational set for Feb. 9 and 10
The Richmond Athletic Centre is hosting its 20th annual Dogwood Invitational gymnastics meet at its new SportsTown B.C. facility Feb. 9 and 10.
The event is expected to feature more than 200 athletes from local gymnastics clubs, and other clubs from throughout British Columbia and Alberta.

Tryouts planned for B.C. Seniors Games
Richmond seniors are being invited to try out for Zone 4 teams that are participating in the upcoming B.C. Seniors Games at Prince George in August.
Close to 7,000 seniors are expected to participate in the Games, open to residents 55 and older as of Aug. 15, 2002. Events include badminton, bocce, bridge, carpet bowling, cribbage, cycling, darts, five-pin bowling, floor curling, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, one-act plays, slo-pitch, snooker, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field and whist.
The Seniors Games are gaining in popularity annually and prvoing to be a way of helping seniors enrich their lives and stay active and fit.

Kendo Club readies for tournament
The Steveston Kendo Club is gearing up for its annual tournament Feb. 9 at the Steveston Community Centre. The event goes from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Junior club members recently enjoyed success at the Vancouver Kendo Tournament where Ryan Murao, Justin Lee and Wendy Nakano all placed first in their respective divisions. The junior team (including Leanne Murao, Kenny Marus, Tony Kikuchi and Paul Lee) also placed second overall.
Locals earn trip to B.C. Winter Games
No fewer than 10 players from the Richmond Girls Ice Hockey Association are going to next months B.C. Winter Games.
Eight members of the local Midget Division Tier 1 team made the cut including goaltender Daniella Winkler, Tara Khan, Jennifer Hamson and Joy McAdam on defence, and forwards Sawa Matsumura, Emily Gotowiec, Stephanie Subject and Jenna Smith. Forwards Frances McPhail and Meghan McClenahan of the Peewee Tier I team also made the team. Claire Bouwers of the Midget Tier 1 club was named as an alternate to the local zone team.
The B.C. Winter Games are Feb. 21 to 24 at Williams Lake.
