Eshragh throws complete game win
Richmond Auto Body Budgies' manager Gary Parker is hoping Wednesday's 4-1 junior baseball victory over the North Delta Pirates is a sign of things to come.
Pitcher Darius Eshragh threw a complete-game four-hitter, gave up just a single run and struck out six to help set the stage for a promising week.
Richmond hosts Newton tonight at 7 p.m. at Latrace Field.
Bellingham and Kelowna are scheduled to play the Richmond Budgies in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 p.m. and 10 a.m. respectively.
In last week's game, Aaron Kawakami, Travis Phillips, Tyler Cookhouse and Mike Basford scored runs.
Jarrod Nagai had two RBIs, while Basford and Phillips each had one.
Kajaks meet back on track
The Richmond Review Kajaks International Track Classic is back.
This year's meet, which is slated for Tuesday at Clement Track (Minoru Park), is expected to again feature some of the world's top up-and-coming athletes and seasoned veterans.
Meet director Vincent Celier anticipates a particularly competitive field for the men's 100-metre race. The field is headed by Nicolas Macrozanaris of Quebec's Vainqeuers Track and Field Club and Peter Ogilvie of B.C.'s Metro Athletic Club.
The meet begins at 6 p.m.
Third period rally falls just short
A four-goal third period surge by the Richmond Roadrunners wasn't quite enough to pull out a victory Monday.
Despite Richmond's heroics, they were narrowly edged 8-6 by the Port Coquitlam Saints in Midget A2 lacrosse action at Minoru Arenas.
Aneil Dhaliwal and Spencer Baines each scored twice in the final frame to tie the game 6-6 with less than five minutes to play. However with only 1:32 remaining, PoCo scored the go-ahead goal and then cemented the win with an empty-netter.
Jake Safarik also had a pair of goals for Richmond, one on a shorthanded breakaway, and the other set up by Jonathan Finlay. Benz Henrikson assisted on both of Baines' goals.
Richmond carried much of the play during the game, but made several defensive errors which Poco was able to capitalize on.
Richmond is coached by Jason Bouchard, who last season led the Midget A2 team to the provincial championship.
Nykon's silver lone B.C. medal
Bryan Nykon won the only medal by a B.C. athlete at the Canadian National Judo Championships last week in Sept Iles, Quebec.
The Steveston judoka won his first three matches before losing to the eventual gold-medalist to finish second in the men's 81-kilogram division.
Murao sets pace
Ryan Murao led a strong showing by Steveston kendo at the provincial federation junior tournament last week. Murao was second in the boys' 10-and-under age group, while Justin Lee (11-13), Ryan Campbell and Kenny Marus (14-15) all placed third. Iain Turner, 10, Testu Takagaki, 14, Adam Miller, 14, and Ronald Li, 14, also impressed.
Locals win scholarships
Two Richmond Girls' Ice Hockey Association players have been recognized for their outstanding play.
Antonia Hertel and Daniella Winkler have received prestigious scholarships from the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association.
Hertel won the Arthur Griffiths Scholarship Award of $3,000 and begins her studies at the Univeristy of B.C. this fall, planning to become a veterinarian.
Winkler was awarded the PCAHA scholarship award of $1,000. The Grade 11 student plans to study psychology after completing her high school studies.
Richmond falls flat in third period
Inexperience stood in the way of the Richmond Roadrunners on Wednesday.
Although playing their second game in as many days, Richmond came out strong against the Burnaby Lakers and within seven minutes had a three-goal lead. But a third-period collapse resulted in a 13-10 loss in the B.C. Intermediate Lacrosse League.
"We didn't do the work needed to win at the end tonight," coach Gord Frederickson said.
Richmond's second line of Kevin Leggatt, Brock Nordman, Chris Manwaring, Jeff Buchanan and Adam Mulford played a strong game at both ends of the floor. Leggatt twice set up Manwaring for goals, and also assisted on a marker by Brock Nordman. Freddie Klomp also scored one of the Richmond goals.
Ron Schibald had another outstanding game in the nets for Richmond, turning aside 53 Burnaby shots.
Two in second gives Stealers win
The Buck and Ear Stealers made the most of their chances Wednesday for a 2-0 Richmond Senior Men's Fastball League win over the Landing Pub Suds.
All the scoring came in the second inning. Lead-off batter Mark Dunlop walked and scored on a single by Steve Easdown. And then Easdown scored on a single by Bob Kelly.
The stats were otherwise even, with both teams earning six hits and a walk off winning pitcher Travis Kraft and Dave Fretz of the Suds. Rick McGrath was 2-for-3 for the Stealers.
Taylor tops in all eight races
Richard Taylor was first in all eight events he swam at the recent West Coast Open hosted by the Richmond Rapids.
Several other Rapids also had top-eight finishes at the event, which for many was their first long course swim meet of the season.
Veteran Walter Wu was among the top five in three events, Tannis Lai was fourth in the 50-metre butterfly and 200 freestyle, and Larissa Vishniakoff won the 200 breastroke and was top three in five other events.
Geoffrey Chen, Holly Ferguson, Johnny Huang, Corinna Lau, Rebecca Stephen, Andriy Nokhrin, Virginia Szabo and Anthony Tran also had strong showings.
Sophie Mafredi led the 14-and-under swimmers with seven top-eight finishes including a bronze medal in the 200 breaststroke. Teri Lai, Jennifer Hsueh, Herman Du, Ricky Kwok and Nicole Hunds (who won the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley) also impressed.
Michael Shramko and Kelvin Cheung made the provincial AA qualifying time for 11-and 12-year-olds in the 200 breaststroke.
Local judoka at national Championship
Four members of the Steveston Judo Club are competing this week at the senior national championships in Sept Iles, Quebec.
Bryan Nykon, Ryan Uyeyama and brothers Brent and Eric Tanaka were selected to the B.C. team based on their tournament results throughout this season.
Michael Wasend of Richmond has won a silver medal at the recent regional indoor archery championships.
Wasend earned his second-place finish in the men's cub recurve category at the meet which featured more than 500 competitors.
