FOOTBALL

Raiders remain undefeated

Don Fennell, Sports Editor

The Richmond Raiders remain undefeated at 4-0 after downing the White Rock Titans 35-12 at McNair field Sunday.

The Midget Division football club used its superior ground attack to build a 27-0 by the second quarter. But costly penalities, more than 100 yards worth, let White Rock back into the game.

Tailback Stuart Milton opened the scoring for Richmond on a 15-year sweep. After Trevor Mackie recovered a fumble for Richmond, tailback R.C. Esteban scored on the ensuing series, ploughing in from five yards out.

The second quarter produced two unconverted TDs as Aeron Kawakami scored on a 30-yard reverse and Milton, demonstrating again why he is one of the best backs in the league, broke a few tackles and scampered 40-yards for his second TD of the game.

But White Rock got on the board before the half was up on an electrifying 70-yard run by tailback Nan Cheng.

Richmond entered the half leading 28-6 after James Hatch punted a 45 yard single.

Titans opened the scoring in the second half on a 60-yard reception by Cheng.

Esteban rounded out the scoring for Richmond on a 25-yard TD run.

For the most part, the Raider offensive line did a good job controlling the line of scrimmage. Centre Greg Hastings, guards Ross Anderson, Nick Barnes, Jordan Seeley, Jamie Snell and tackles Campbell McLeod, Harry Sandhu, Ricky Bachra and tightends Jarrod Nagai and George Kovalyov played their most consistent game of the season.

On defence for Richmond, Brandon Sims had two sacks, while both Milton and Mackie picked off passes.

Raiders coach Glenn Kishi said he would focus on getting his team more disciplined this week.

The Raiders take their 4-0 record to Bear Creek Park Sunday to play the North Surrey Bears. Kickoff is at 3:30.
