Local rinks heading to provincials

Two rinks from Richmond's Super League of Curling are heading to B.C. championships next month.

The Craig McLeod foursome (featuring Mel Steffin, Phil Breton and Don Irwin) has qualified for the provincial senior men's championships Jan. 8 to 11 in Campbell River, while the Cory McLaughlin team (including Renee Duplisse, Rhonda Stoner, and Heather Osachoff) has qualified for the Scott Tournament of Hearts B.C. women's championships Jan. 20 to 24 in Maple Ridge.

Ken Maskiewich leads the Super League with an 8-0 mark, while Doug Bradley is 7-2, and Kristy Lewis 6-3.

Meanwhile, Andrew Miller's Richmond team competed in the B.C. Junior Men's championships in White Rock last weekend. The locals (Miller, Eric Adamson, Matthew Millar and Aaron Anderson) were participating in the first major event of their careers.

Richmond residents Kim and Kelly Thompson teamed up with Kayla Chander and skip Sarah Wark of the Royal City Curling Club to win the B event at the Coast Regional Junior Ladies' championships in Tunnel Town Nov. 28 to 30.

The team now qualifies for the provincial championships Feb. 26 to 29 in Port Alberni.

Warriors hand Golgis first loss

Team Ice Golgis became the last club to lose a West Coast Basketball League game this season, falling 73-66 to the Warriors Sunday at The Basketball Centre.

The Golgis went into the game with six straight wins.

As with past meetings between these two teams, it came down to the last few minutes before the game was decided. Corey Ogilvie led the Warriors with 16 points, while Mark Tasic added 13.

X-Men put together one of their most impressive efforts of the season but still came up short falling 88-77 to the Meralomas, who with the win joined the Golgis atop the league standings.

X-Men relied on Jason Leslie's 16 first-half points to keep them in the game, but thanks to a game-high 27 points from Chris Porteous the Meralomas were able to battle back and controlled much of the second half. Pete Morris added 14 points for the Meralomas and Lee Craven 24 for the X-Men.

Moult Athletics failed to hold onto to a seven-point halftime lead and lost 78-71 to NT. Andrew Mavis and Steve Dynie combined for 41 point for NT who went on a 17-6 run to close out the second half.
